Start a Blog

Of course, starting a blog is one of the best ways to start making money as a content creator.

I get it; writing isn’t for everyone. But trust me when I tell you that a blog can be a HUGE income driver for your content creation business.

Our two blogs, That Texas Couple and Totally Texas Travel, are major sources of income for us.

There are many ways to make money with a blog, including everything listed in this article!

We make money from our blogs with ad revenue, sponsored posts, affiliate links, and more.

Using our social media accounts to drive website traffic, we can leverage more views and value for our partner brands.

Not only that, but the traffic from our sites also helps to drive traffic and followers to our social media accounts, so it’s a win-win!

Sponsored Posts

One of the top ways to make money as a content creator is by doing sponsored posts.

I’m sure you have seen many sponsored posts from influencers you follow on various social media outlets.

So, what exactly is a sponsored post?

A sponsored post is when a company or brand pays the content creator to promote a brand or product.

This can include sponsored posts on your blog, Instagram page, or any media platform.

Believe it or not, sponsored posts are a great money-making opportunity for those starting out.

The key to this is figuring out your pricing rates so that you can land brand partnerships and still make money!

One of the best ways to land sponsored posts when starting out is to pitch your ideas to brands.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of the top ways for content creators and influencers to make money.

So, what exactly is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing allows you to affiliate with a brand or product. Once signed up, you will receive specific URLs tying you to the product or brand sales.

You then promote the product by writing or discussing it on social media. When you do this, you link to your special URL to receive a commission off each purchase.

In all of my posts, you see a disclaimer at the top of the post stating that some of the links in my articles are affiliate links.

Then, when a reader clicks on the link and makes a purchase, I get a small commission (that does not cost the reader anything extra).

It’s basically the brand sharing a portion of their profit in return for you promoting their product.

Thanks to the new link feature on Instagram, you can easily create stories linking to the products you love and recommend.

Even small creators have great success using affiliate links. This is how we started making money with our travel business from day one!

The commissions might be small at first, but as you grow, so will your commissions!

Here are a few of my favorite affiliations:

Memberships and Subscriptions

With a membership program, members receive benefits or perks for joining your membership program.

These perks can come in many forms, but some of the most common include exclusive content, members-only events, access to an online community, and course content/services.

While you can easily form a membership service on your website by password-protecting certain pages, you can also achieve a membership site through other means.

Some content creators deliver membership benefits through email or an online group.

Another way to make money as a content creator is to sell subscriptions. A subscription allows your paying subscribers to access a product, service, or content that is not readily available to the public.

Instagram recently started a subscription program where followers can subscribe to your channel. We subscribe to a few of our favorite influencers, have won giveaways, and have loved seeing behind-the-scene footage of them working.

While not as popular, many content creators offer subscriptions to their audience. Generally, though, these are paired or used within a membership service.

Ad Revenue

Our number one source of consistent, steady income from our content creation is ad revenue, specifically ad revenue from our websites.

But websites aren’t the only option for ad revenue. You can sell ad space on any platform, even your newsletters.

Of course, there are multiple sources of ad revenue as well. You can work with an ad network like we do (we LOVE Mediavine) or sell ad space directly to brands or businesses.

We prefer the ease of working with an ad network. While most ad networks have a lower CPM (cost per thousand “ad views”), they do all of the work for you, allowing you to focus on what you love most: content creation!

Each ad network has its requirements for qualification, so be sure to research before applying.

Here are a few popular ad networks to consider:

  • Mediavine- publishers with 50K pageviews a month or more can apply
  • Google AdSense
  • Monumetric- publishers with 10K pageviews a month or more can apply, making this accessible for creators of all sizes
  • AdThrive- publishers with 100K pageviews a month or more can apply
  • Propeller Ads- no minimum page views required to apply

Freelance Work and Services

Another popular way for content creators to make money is to sell freelance work or services.

Some examples of services include:

  • copywriting
  • video editing
  • photography
  • social media management
  • coaching
  • videography or video editing
  • graphic design

Choosing to offer a service is a great way to build your skills and to develop authority within your niche as well!

Courses and Info Products

Providing online courses or information products for sale is a great way to make money as a content creator.

These products can include online courses, e-books, videos, articles, books, and other materials used to teach your audience something.

We have a travel influencer handbook that teaches people how to get into the world of content creation.

The great thing about courses and information products is that you can generate revenue for years with relatively low overhead expenses once you create them.

This type of “passive income” is extremely popular in content creation and is my favorite type of income!

Supporter and Fan Contributions

another way to make money as a content creator is to allow supporter and fan contributions.

This is when your most loyal fans support your work by giving an ongoing monetary contribution to you.

The difference between this and a membership service is that supporters’ dedication to your work is the supporting factor behind supporter contributions. In contrast, members usually sign up for a membership service because of the specific benefit is gives them access to.

I haven’t personally done a supporter page, but I do know several bloggers that do. Have you seen the “buy me a cup of coffee” icon on people’s pages? Well, this is an example of a supporter contribution.

Merchandise and Physical Products

Many content creators make money selling merchandise or physical products.

If you have a loyal following, consider making branded merchandise. Just think, you could sell mugs, tees, bags, hats, you name it that has your tagline slogan or your brand on it.

Think outside the box when coming up with the merchandise or physical product you want to sell, and then start researching how you will produce that merchandise.

Several companies will produce merchandise on demand. That means you provide the design and the customers, and the company takes over from there.

On-demand merchandise producers include:

  • Spring
  • Bonfire
  • Amplifier
  • Printful
  • Merch by Amazon
