Capri, Italy

blue water in front of a shoreline dotted with Italian houses and boats

Marty and I had the incredible opportunity to spend our honeymoon in Europe.  After spending some time in Rome, we decided to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the big city and head to Capri.  Despite the fact that we only spent one night in Capri (we should have spent more), I feel it should be on every list of incredible honeymoon destinations.

Capri is a beautiful island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea on the south side of the Gulf of Naples.  As the ferry approaches the island, you are instantly awestruck by the beautiful limestone rocks that jut out of the sea in front of you.  Honeymooners can relax in one of the many bed and breakfasts on the island (I recommend choosing one in Anacapri) before visiting the Blue Grotto or riding to the top of Mount Solaro for one of the most spectacular views you will ever see.

Relax with your loved one while sipping limoncello surrounded by olive trees and beautiful Meditteranean flowers.  You are guaranteed to be swept away with Italian charm on the beautiful island of Capri.

Bora Bora

turquoise water of the ocean with a mountain in the back and a couple embracing one another

The French Polynesian Island of Bora Bora is an essential honeymoon destination famous for its clear turquoise lagoon, romantic sunsets against the auspicious backdrop of Mount Otemanu, and of course, for their idealistic over-water bungalows.  What can be more romantic than your own private oasis in the middle of the Pacific Ocean?

Watch fish swim under you from the glass-bottom floor and let the soothing sounds of gentle waves lightly rock you to sleep at night.  Imagine waking up every morning and being able to step right off your bungalow and right into the calm ocean water where you can swim, snorkel, or scuba dive amongst some of the most magnificent coral reefs in the world, that is home to many amazing species of flora and fauna.  Many overwater bungalows even come fitted with their own private infinity pool or hot tub, making for the most romantic location to watch the sunset with your lover and a glass of wine in your hand.

An ultimate destination to relax and unwind after months of wedding planning and all the celebrations around getting married.  Bora Bora is paradise in every sense of the word.

Malta

couple staring at one another in front of a sea and town

My husband and I got married only last year and were looking for easily accessible honeymoon destinations.  My passport was expiring only two weeks after our wedding day which meant we could not leave the Schengen area.  What’s more, we are great lovers of art, history, and local cuisine.  And as it were our honeymoon and we were living in Finland at the time, it absolutely had to be a warm and sunny destination.  Now, in Europe, there are a couple of places that fit this description, but we ultimately settled on Malta as we had only six days and determined that that would be enough time to explore this tiny island nation.

We could not have chosen a better place.  Malta brims with history, some of its megalithic temples date back to 3000 BC.

The sun was shining during our visit and it was even warm enough to bum out on the beach and go swimming in the waters of the Mediterranean in late May.  And when it comes to food, oh well, let’s just say between rabbit stew, ftira and pastizzi, we had nothing more to wish for.  Malta is only a relatively short flight from most European cities and is relatively cheap before the high season.  We booked ourselves into an apartment and enjoyed a bottle of wine overlooking Marsamxett harbor from our terrace every evening.  It was so beautiful we were really rather sad to leave when our 6-day honeymoon in Malta came to an end.

Costa Rica

Sun setting behind clouds with the ocean in the foreground with two people walking on the beach

I first traveled to Costa Rica in 2003 and recently went back to honeymoon with my new wife.  No matter what year it is, Costa Rica is a prime honeymoon destination.  For a small country, there are plenty of places for a romantic getaway.  Beautiful beaches with gorgeous sunsets (and sunrises if you’re an early bird) are the perfect place to unwind after the hustle and bustle of getting married.

With the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, you won’t have a problem finding a place to suit your needs.  What makes Costa Rica especially great is that there are always activities available.  Kayaking through mangroves or hiking through a primary rainforest in search of exotic animals can be a great way to bond with your new partner.  After a day of excitement, head back to your hotel to watch the sunset on the beach and maybe treat one another to a romantic massage.    Or, if you would rather, sit in a hammock while watching the waves roll in while sipping on juice from a fresh coconut.

Whatever you and your new partner love most about life, besides each other, of course, you can find in Costa Rica.

Palawan, Philippines

turquoise blue water with a beach covered in palm trees

Palawan has been voted multiple times as the World’s Best Island, and it makes sense that it’s also one of the best honeymoon destinations in the world.  Palawan is quite big, and as it’s an archipelagic province, there are various islands/places you can stay at with your significant other.

El Nido’s best feature is its green lagoons surrounded by thousand-year-old karsts.  It also offers luxurious accommodations, such as water villas and exclusive island resorts, and cruises which are great options for honeymooners.  Coron, meanwhile, is more rustic with its green-blue beaches and lakes. Port Barton is a laid-back location, perfect for couples who prefer a quiet time on a beach.  There is also Balabac at the southern end, which has chalk-white sand.  Balabac is the least commercialized of these, and it’s perfect for those who don’t mind basic accommodations in exchange for great sights and adventures.

No matter where you stay in Palawan, you’re guaranteed to have an amazing time with your partner.  The mere sights make it a great option, not to mention the unique experiences it offers- excursions to beautiful islands, adventures such as kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving, delicious seafood dinners, and sunset views.  It’s a great option for those on a honeymoon or anniversary vacation.

Maldives

wooden deck with chaise lounge chairs overlooking turquoise blue water

You couldn’t have a list of honeymoon destinations without a mention of the breath-taking islands that make up the Maldives!  Despite it being a very popular honeymoon destination (leading many people to shy away from it for fear of it being overrated, cliche or too busy), the Maldives is one destination that doesn’t disappoint!  If you’re looking for a relaxing honeymoon destination, the Maldives is it!

Consisting of 26 main atolls split into smaller islands, the Maldives really does have something for everyone; every island offers unique views of nature and breathtaking blue waters, offering endless diving opportunities.  Different depths of the sea mean different wildlife and nature.  Some islands are known for their beautiful coral and wildlife, others are known for the water-sports and thrill-seeking experiences they offer.

Many of the individual islands in the Maldives have been turned into luxury resorts frequently populated by honeymooners.  The resorts offer a relaxing escape from reality, in the most serene of settings.  Bag yourself an over-water villa, and relax without a care in the world and an uninterrupted view of the bluest water you’ll ever see.  A private pool and a ladder leading directly into the sea means you’ll never have to leave your villa or loved one for anything!  It doesn’t get more relaxing and romantic than that!

If you’re staying at a resort, make time to visit the capital city of Male to get a feel for Maldivian culture.  This small floating city is buzzing with life and culture, and is a nice little adventure during a relaxing escape!

(P.S. Make sure you visit outside of the monsoon season when it’s rainy and grey!)

Paris, France

Notre Dame Cathedral in the background with the Seine River in front

I couldn’t imagine putting together a list of honeymoon destinations and not including Paris, France.  I mean Paris is the city of romance (and one of the stops on our European honeymoon)!

Paris is the perfect honeymoon destination for couples who love fine dining, culture, and romance.  Treat your new spouse to romantic views of the city while cruising along the Seine River before dining atop the iconic Eiffel Tower.  Of course, you will want to treat your partner to all of the Paris’ major attractions like the Louvre, Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame, and L’Arc de Triomphe.  You might even want to whisk your loved one away to a beautiful chateau for the day.

While touring the city, take time to truly enjoy the romance of the environment around you.  Wander the cobblestone streets, find quaint cafes to sip champagne, and of course, add your lock to the locks at ‘lover’s bridge’.  In Paris, you truly will find romance around every corner.
