Why Oia, Santorini is a Must-Visit Destination
The Unique Charm of Oia
Walking into Oia, you quickly realize why the village is celebrated.
The village’s narrow, winding streets are lined with quaint shops, delightful cafes, and beautiful homes adorned with bright bougainvillea, making it a picturesque place to visit.
Of course, its location on the norther tip of Santorini guarantees some spectacular views as well, making it a hot spot for photographers, like Marty.
The classic whitewashed buildings and the blue dome churches are symbolic of Santorini and one of the reasons that we wanted to visit the island.
Combine this with the serene atmosphere, and you have the makings for a great destination.
Oia’s Famous Sunset
One of the main attractions in Oia is its world-famous sunset, and trust us when we tell you, it lives up to the hype!
A highlight of the island is watching the skies transform each evening.
We enjoyed watching the Santorini sunset from the Oia Castel, the Sunset Restaurant, and various rooftop bars found throughout the village.
Top Things to Do in Oia, Santorini
Explore Oia’s Charming Streets
Wander Through the Narrow Pathways
There’s something magical about pedestrian only zones, and one of the many reasons that I love Europe so much, these areas just seem more prevalent than they are in the United States.
Of course, Oia fits this description perfectly.
Take time to stroll through the narrow, cobblestone streets and explore the charming boutiques and cozy cafes that line them throughout the village.
We had the best time sipping drinks and shopping for handmade jewelry, local art, and traditional Greek crafts during our visit.
Of course, we also enjoyed the many artisanal bakeries serving up traditional Greek baklava and loukoum. YUM!
Pro Tip: To get a true feel for the city, we recommend spending a few nights in Oia. The narrow street are extremely crowded during the day when the cruise ship passengers are in town, so to truly get a feel for this historic city, explore in the late evenings when all of the day trippers have left the village.
Visit the Iconic Blue-Domed Churches
Oia is iconic for its blue-domed churches that dot the hillside.
During your visit, don’t miss the opportunity to photograph these beauties.
Some to take note of include the Church of Panagia, located near the main square, and the Church of Agios Georgios, perched on the hillside.
The Church of Panagia is the most photographed site in Oia, and it’s easy to see why. You can’t resist snapping pictures of the stunning blue dome and charming bell tower of this church.
Pro Tip: For the best pictures, consider waking up early in the morning to capture the city with the perfect light, and to beat the crowds to these iconic churches.
Discover Oia Castle
Oia Castle, or the Castle of Oia, is a historic fortress that offers panoramic views of the caldera and the island of Santorini.
Built in the 15th century to protect the island from pirates, the castle now serves as a fantastic vantage point for sunset viewing.
The castle is now ruins, and is free to visit, so it’s an easy addition to your itinerary.
People flock to the castle to see the iconic Santorini sunset as it is a great vantage point, but, really, the castle provides stunning views throughout the day and into the night.
No matter what time of day you visit, be sure to bring your camera because you will definitely want to document the extraordinary views!
Pro Tip: If you want to watch the sunset from Oia Castle, get there early to secure your spot as this area is very busy with tour groups.
If you prefer a quieter place to watch the sunset, explore the castle during the day, and then make reservations at one of the many restaurants that serve us the same gorgeous sunset view.
Enjoy a Meal at a Local Restaurant
Oia boasts a variety of dining options, from casual eateries to fine dining establishments, so there is truly something for every budget.
We loved trying traditional Greek dishes like moussaka, souvlaki, and fresh seafood while in Oia.
Popular restaurants include Amoudi Bay Fish Tavern, known for its fresh catch of the day and beautiful seaside setting.
Roka, a cozy eatery with a rustic ambiance, offers a delightful selection of local dishes made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
For a more upscale dining experience, consider Selene, which combines modern culinary techniques with traditional Greek flavors.
Pro Tip: Reservations are recommended, especially during the busy summer months.
Relax at Ammoudi Bay
If you find yourself visiting Oia during warm weather, don’t miss the opportunity to visit Ammoundi Bay, located just below Oia.
This picturesque fishing village is surrounded by clear blue water that is perfect for enjoying a refreshing swim.
If it isn’t warm enough to swim, you should still visit the area, just to take in the stunning views.
You can reach Ammoudi Bay by descending a series of steps from Oia or by taking a short boat ride.
While spending time at the bay, be sure to check out the local tavernas to enjoy some freshly caught seafood and a relaxing dining experience.
Visit the Maritime Museum
Explore Oia’s Maritime History
History lovers will enjoy a visit to Oia’s Maritime Museum.
This museum offers a glimpse into the island’s rich seafaring history.
Here, you can see the museum’s collection of model ships, maritime clothing, and navigational instruments all housed in a beautiful 19th-century mansion!
The exhibits are well-curated, and the museum’s location offers scenic views of the caldera.
Take a Boat Tour of the Caldera
To see Santorini from a different perspective, we recommend taking a boat tour.
There are numerous tours offered ranging from sailing around the islands to swimming or snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the caldera.
Seeing Oia and the island of Santorini from the water is truly magnificent and shouldn’t be missed!
Pro Tip: Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a hat, as the sun can be quite strong.
Tips for Visiting Oia, Santorini
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Oia is during the spring (April to June) or fall (September to October) when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are smaller.
Just keep in mind, summer is the peak tourist season, so if you prefer a quieter experience, plan your trip during the shoulder seasons.
Visiting during shoulder season like we did means you’ll find fewer tourists, better hotel rates, and more comfortable weather for exploring.
Getting Around
Oia is best explored on foot, as its narrow streets are not suitable for cars.
You can use local buses, taxis, or rent a scooter to explore other parts of the island.
Be prepared for some uphill walking, as Oia is situated on a slope.
Dress Code and Footwear
Wear comfortable shoes for walking, as the cobblestone streets can be uneven.
Also, remember to dress modestly (cover your shoulders and knees) when visiting churches and religious sites. Light, breathable clothing is recommended, especially during the warmer months.
Conclusion
We loved our time in Santorini and were so glad that we planned to stay a few nights in Oia.
The stunning sunsets, charming streets, and delicious cuisine stole our hearts, and made us quickly realize why this destination is on so many people’s couple’s bucket list.
Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or simply looking for a romantic getaway, Oia will not disappoint.

I visited in the 90s and it was busy then, and I am a bit scared to go back, as I heard it gets very full. I will probably stick to your advice and visit at the end of the season and travel by public ferry and enjoy the winter days !
