Top Day Trips from Amsterdam
Zaanse Schans
Zaanse Schans is a must-visit for anyone interested in Dutch history and culture. Located just a 20-minute train ride from Amsterdam, this open-air museum provides a window into 18th and 19th-century Dutch life.
The village is home to a collection of traditional windmills that are still operational today.
Each windmill serves a different purpose: the De Kat windmill, for instance, is a paint mill, where you can see how pigments are ground to make paint. De Gekroonde Poelenburg is a sawmill where you can watch large wooden planks being cut.
In addition to the windmills, Zaanse Schans features traditional wooden houses, some of which are open to the public as museums showcasing Dutch life from bygone eras.
A visit to the Cheese Farm lets you sample and purchase some of the best Dutch cheeses, including Gouda and Edam.
The Clog Workshop offers demonstrations on how wooden shoes are crafted, and you can even try your hand at making a pair.
Zaanse Schans is not just a historical attraction but a living, breathing piece of Dutch heritage, and is an easy day trip from Amsterdam!
Keukenhof
Spring is the ideal time to visit Keukenhof, known as the “Garden of Europe.”
Located about 40 minutes from Amsterdam by car or direct bus, Keukenhof is a spectacular display of floral beauty.
Keukenhof spans over 79 acres and is home to more than seven million flowers, primarily tulips but also including hyacinths, daffodils, and lilies.
The garden’s theme changes every year, ensuring a fresh experience for returning visitors.
Stroll through themed gardens, marvel at artistic floral arrangements, and take in the vibrant colors that create a kaleidoscope of floral artistry.
Additionally, Keukenhof offers flower-related activities such as flower arranging demonstrations and boat tours through the surrounding bulb fields.
During your visit, don’t miss the chance to explore the nearby bulb-growing region, which features endless fields of tulips in various stages of bloom.
Haarlem
Just a 20-minute train ride from Amsterdam, Haarlem offers a charming escape into Dutch history and culture. Haarlem is a city with a well-preserved medieval core and a rich cultural heritage.
The centerpiece of Haarlem is the Grote Kerk (Great Church), an imposing Gothic structure that has stood since the 14th century.
Its tall spire and detailed façade are a testament to medieval architecture, and inside, you’ll find beautiful stained glass windows and an impressive organ.
The Teylers Museum is another highlight, being the oldest museum in the Netherlands.
Founded in 1784, the museum houses a fascinating collection of art, scientific instruments, fossils, and mineral specimens.
The museum’s historic interiors and diverse exhibits provide a glimpse into the scientific and artistic achievements of past centuries.
Haarlem’s streets are lined with historic buildings, quaint boutiques, and cozy cafés.
The city also hosts a vibrant market at the Grote Markt, where you can sample local produce and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Rotterdam is a dynamic city about an hour from Amsterdam, renowned for its modern architecture and maritime history.
Unlike Amsterdam, Rotterdam was heavily bombed during World War II, leading to a cityscape filled with innovative, modern buildings.
The Maritime Museum in Rotterdam is dedicated to the city’s maritime history. The museum’s extensive collection includes ship models, maritime art, and historical documents.
Highlights include the museum’s interactive exhibits and large-scale ship models that offer insight into Rotterdam’s seafaring past.
Architectural enthusiasts will appreciate the Cube Houses, designed by Piet Blom.
These unique, tilted cube-shaped houses offer a striking contrast to traditional architecture and provide a fascinating glimpse into innovative housing design.
Another architectural marvel is the Erasmus Bridge, an iconic symbol of Rotterdam.
Spanning the Maas River, the bridge’s elegant design and striking silhouette have made it a landmark of modern engineering.
Scheveningen
Scheveningen, a district of The Hague, is a popular beach destination about an hour from Amsterdam.
It offers a delightful contrast to the city’s urban environment, with its expansive sandy beaches and bustling seaside promenade.
The beach at Scheveningen stretches for over 4 kilometers, providing plenty of space for sunbathing, beach sports, or simply strolling along the shore.
The Scheveningen Pier is a major attraction, featuring a Ferris wheel that offers panoramic views of the North Sea and the city.
For a taste of local culture, visit one of the many seafood restaurants along the promenade. Fresh fish and seafood are local specialties, and dining with a view of the sea makes for a memorable experience.

I loved Zaanse, and for those atmospheric windmills, if you want to venture a bit further out towards Rotterdam, Kinderdijk is also a great destination but requires some careful planning, as it is not as straightforward on public transport
