Things To Do in Amsterdam

Amsterdam Walking Tour

things to do in Amsterdam

Whenever we visit a new destination, we always love to start our trip by taking a walking tour with a local guide. This allows us to learn more about the city’s history and culture and to get a good idea of things we might want to explore further.

Doing a tour with a local allows you not only hear some fabulous stories, but to also get inside tips on things like where to eat and drink, and what to see.

The Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank House is a profoundly moving museum dedicated to the Jewish wartime diarist Anne Frank, and has been on my list of places to visit since I was a little girl.

Like millions of people throughout the world, reading Anne’s diary touched my soul, and is one of the first reasons that I discovered Amsterdam.

Located at Prinsengracht 263, this museum is situated in the very building where Anne and her family hid from the Nazis during World War II. As you tour the hidden annex, you’ll gain insight into the hardships Anne faced and the courage she displayed.

The museum’s exhibits include personal artifacts and excerpts from Anne’s diary, offering a poignant reminder of the impact of war and the resilience of the human spirit.

Tickets for the Anne Frank House should be booked well in advance due to high demand, especially if you are visiting April thru October. Purchase your tickets through the Anne Frank House website.

Tickets go on sale six weeks in advance and go on sale the Tuesday morning at 10 am CET time for the date six weeks in the future. This is important to know if you are wanting a specific date and time to visit while you are in Amsterdam.

The museum offers a free audio guide, which is well worth it.  In addition, they also offer an additional pre-visit presentation for an additional fee.

The Rijksmuseum

things to do in Amsterdam

A visit to Amsterdam would be incomplete without exploring the Rijksmuseum. This renowned museum, located in the heart of the Museumplein, is home to an extensive collection of Dutch art and history.

Marvel at masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age, including Rembrandt’s celebrated “Night Watch,” which captures the drama of a militia group in a grandiose, life-sized format.

If you aren’t familiar with the Dutch Golden Age, this was a period in history where the Dutch controlled many of the important trade routes from Europe to destinations around the world.  Of course, art and wealth go hand in hand, so you can quickly understand why this era was so popular for Dutch artists.

The museum’s extensive collection also features works by Vermeer, Hals, and Van Dyck.

Beyond the art, the Rijksmuseum’s grand architecture and beautifully landscaped gardens make it a cultural landmark in its own right.

To go more in depth and learn more about the art, consider taking a guided tour of the museum.

If I were you, I would book my tickets in advance. This will allow you to bypass the ticket line and go straight to the security line once you arrive.

Also, please keep in mind that your bags have to be checked. This is common in museums and historical houses in Europe. Rest assured that they will be safe in the coatroom.

Cruise the Canals

things to do in Amsterdam

A canal cruise is an iconic Amsterdam experience that provides a unique perspective of the city’s architecture and history, and, honestly, was a highlight of our trip!

Amsterdam Canal Cruises offer various options, including daytime tours, evening cruises, and private charters.

As you glide along the city’s intricate canal network, you’ll pass historic buildings, charming bridges, and picturesque houseboats.

Some cruises also offer themed experiences, such as dinner cruises or guided tours, allowing you to enjoy the city’s beauty while learning more about its history and culture.

We chose to take a sunset cruise, and absolutely loved seeing the city’s lights come on while gliding through the iconic canals.

The Van Gogh Museum

Art aficionados should not miss the Van Gogh Museum, which houses the largest collection of Vincent van Gogh’s artworks in the world.

Located on Museumplein, the museum showcases over 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and numerous letters by Van Gogh, providing an in-depth look at his artistic evolution and personal struggles.

Van Gogh was born and grew up in the Netherlands, so it only makes sense that a museum celebrating him would be housed in the capital city.

Highlights include iconic works such as “Sunflowers,” “The Bedroom,” and “Irises.”

The museum also features works by Van Gogh’s contemporaries and offers temporary exhibitions that delve into various aspects of his life and influence.

The Stedelijk Museum

For a deep dive into modern and contemporary art, the Stedelijk Museum is a must-visit.

Situated near the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk is renowned for its impressive collection of modern art, featuring works by influential artists like Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich, and Marc Chagall.

The museum’s collection spans the 20th century and beyond, showcasing both pioneering movements and contemporary innovations.

The museum’s striking modernist architecture, with its sleek black-and-white design, complements its avant-garde exhibits and offers a stark contrast to Amsterdam’s historical buildings.

Wander Through the Jordaan District

things to do in Amsterdam

The Jordaan is one of Amsterdam’s most picturesque neighborhoods, known for its narrow streets, quaint canals, and charming atmosphere.

Originally developed as a working-class area in the early 17th century, it has since transformed into one of the city’s most desirable and lively districts.

Wander through its maze of streets to discover trendy boutiques, art galleries, and local markets.

The Jordaan is also home to several traditional Dutch cafés and restaurants, where you can enjoy local delicacies and experience the laid-back, bohemian vibe of the area.

One restaurant in this area that you have to visit is Winkel 43 and try their famous Dutch Apple Pie.  Trust me, you won’t be sorry.  We liked it so much, we visited twice during our 5 days in the city!

Relax in Vondelpark

For a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, head to Vondelpark. Amsterdam’s largest and most famous park, Vondelpark/

This lush green space is perfect for leisurely strolls, picnics, and outdoor activities.

The park features a variety of walking and biking paths, picturesque ponds, and open lawns.

During the summer months, Vondelpark hosts a range of open-air concerts and performances at the Open Air Theatre.

The park also boasts several charming cafés where you can relax and enjoy a drink while soaking in the natural surroundings.

Savor Dutch Delicacies

Amsterdam’s culinary scene offers a delightful range of traditional Dutch treats and international flavors.

Sample local specialties such as stroopwafels, thin waffle cookies filled with caramel syrup, and herring, which is often served with onions and pickles.

We loved the french fry scene in Amsterdam. There are fry shops located throughout the city where you can get some delicious hot french fries along with loads of sauces and toppings.

You can find these delicacies at street vendors and markets throughout the city.

Experience the Food Scene at Foodhallen

The Foodhallen is an indoor food market located in the Oud-West neighborhood, offering a diverse range of gourmet street food and craft beverages.

With its lively atmosphere and eclectic selection of food stalls, Foodhallen is an excellent destination for foodies looking to sample a variety of culinary styles in one location.

From artisanal cheeses and gourmet burgers to sushi and tapas, the Foodhallen caters to a wide array of tastes.

The market also features a selection of craft beers and specialty cocktails, making it a great spot for a casual meal or a fun night out.

I love Amsterdam so much, and I am not into partying at all! It's just such a special city with the traditional houses and canals. I haven't been in a while but last time I visited it was pretty busy with summer tourists, but I would love to visit again. Especially since the city is trying to discourage "party tourists"
